Your vehicles diesel particulate filter, also known as DPF, is responsible for removing soot and particulates from the exhaust. On diesel vehicles the combustion process is "dirtier" than conventional gasoline powered engines. Due to environmental regulations all modern diesel engines are equipped with a DPF system. Some modern vehicles have the ability to clean out the filter using a process called active regeneration which essentially burns off the soot and debris that builds up inside the filter. In some cases, active regeneration cannot clean the filter adequately enough which can cause an array of performance issues. If this occurs you will get a CEL warning on your instrument cluster with codes associated to a failed or blocked DPF.
